Christian Philosopher Peter S. Williams, considers the arguments of ‘the new atheists’ and finds them wanting in his new book A Sceptic’s Guide to Atheism (ISBN 9781842276174, price £12.99, published by Paternoster). Atheism has become militant in the past few years with its own popular mass media evangelists such as Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and Daniel Dennett. Williams argues that their case against God, whilst rhetorically canny, is intellectually empty.
A Sceptic’s Guide to Atheism is a lively and provocative read. Williams offers a robust response to the anti-religious claims of ‘The New Atheists’. He examines accusations such as, ‘belief in God is the root of all evil’, ‘faith in God is irrational’, ‘science can explain religion away’ and ‘there is not enough evidence for God’. In each case the arguments of the New Atheists are weighed and found badly wanting.
